KWM2-A TUNE UP PROCEDURE START UP: 1. Assure that the transceiver is connected to a 50 ohm load. 2. Before turning power on, set EMISSION switch to LSB 3. Position POWER switch to ON. Transceiver lights should light up. 4. Position MIKE GAIN full counter clockwise until it clicks. 5. Position RF GAIN full clockwise permanently. Leave it there. INITIAL SET UP: (Note: You do this only once or whenever finals or power supply are changed.) a. Make sure MIKE GAIN is still full counter clockwise (OFF) b. Position METER switch to PLATE c. Position EMISSION switch to LOCK d. Adjust pot on power supply to produce 60 mils on the meter. (NOTE: Collins tuning procedures state 50 ma, however 60 ma is better.) e. Reposition EMISSION switch to LSB. RECEIVER CALIBRATION: 6. Position BAND switch to desired band. 7. Position AF GAIN to hear a signal. 8. Position POWER switch to CAL and rotate the dial until a calibration whine is heard. Move the hairline to the zero. RECEIVER TUNING: (Note: The meter is always an S-Meter in receive regardless of the METER switch setting.) 9. Reposition the POWER switch to ON. 10. Adjust EXCITER TUNE to maximum receiver sensitivity. This peak sensitivity should be about the same as the band markings. 11. Adjust INCR LOAD lever under the PA TUNING to full counter clockwise. TRANSMITTER TUNING: (Note: There are two EMISSION switch positions that activate the transmitter, TUNE and LOCK. In TUNE, the transmitter produces about 30-watts, but LOCK is used for full transmitter power.) 12. Position METER switch to GRID to show power to the finals. 13. Position EMISSION switch to TUNE. 14. Slowly rotate the MIKE GAIN until the meter approaches mid scale. 15. Slowly adjust the EXCITER TUNE to maximize the meter reading. If the needle goes off scale reduce the MIKE GAIN to make it read mid scale (straight up). 16. Readjust the EXCITER TUNE and MIKE GAIN so the meter is straight up with EXCITER TUNE adjusted to the maximum grid reading (peaked). 17. Position METER switch to PLATE. NOTE: With the METER switch in the PLATE position during TRANSMIT the meter measures plate current which always should be dipped to minimum so the circuit is tuned properly 18. Adjust the PA TUNING for a dip. 19. Position EMISSION switch to LOCK (full power). 20. Quickly adjust the PA TUNING again for a dip (minimum current). By using the MIKE GAIN keep current below 200-ma. The dip should be pronounced. If not make sure the INCR LOAD is full counter clockwise (points to the right). 21. Position METER switch to GRID and advance MIKE GAIN to read mid scale. 22. Position EMISSION switch to LSB and allow to cool (about 8-10 sec.). 23. Position METER switch to PLATE. 24. Position EMISSION switch to LOCK and dip it again. 25. Position EMISSION switch to LSB and allow to cool again. 26. Position EMISSION switch to LOCK. 27. Advance antenna load (INCR LOAD) by moving the INCR LOAD clockwise a little, quickly redipping and then advancing the INCR LOAD again redipping each time the INCR LOAD causes the current to rise until the meter reads 300 ma or its maximum meter deflection if less than 300 ma. 28. Position the EMISSION switch to either LSB or USB as desired. 29. Position the METER switch to ALC. 30. Key the transmitter by keying the mike button. 31. Advance the MIKE GAIN clockwise until normal speech causes mid scale deflection. YOU ARE ON THE AIR.
